Real Talk Here: Please Read (This Involves You)

I’m hesitant to bring this up. I’m not sure if I can properly cover this in an article. It’s special to me, and precious, and exactly the sort of thing you’re supposed to share with people.

It’s a belief I have. An idea that a friend of mine gave me the seeds to think with. And it’s big, and it involves all of you. Continue reading

A Short Tale Of Procrastination

Enter Scene.

Setting: A late Sunday morning. Lazy, by any stretch of the imagination. A small quaint house. With wind chimes. I’ve always wanted to have a house with wind chimes.

Characters: An altered and more comical version of myself, and my mute, invisible, and intangible butler, Charley.

Me vs. Me: A Debate With Myself

“What’s the point of this Brandon? Why are you putting yourself through this? All this worrying?”

“Well, I want to do something different on the blog.”

“Different how?”

“You know: new. I write about writing all the time now. I used to write about movies, but even that didn’t stick. I love writing fiction, but they don’t read it enough. I write this blog for them. Not just for me.”

“Well, then write more personal stuff.”

“I can’t.” Continue reading

5 Gift Ideas For Writers

Are you a writer trying to think about what you want for the holidays? Do you have a special writer in your life? Do you want a humorous holiday-themed article to read?

Then I’ve got you covered. And though the writer’s “Holiday Wish List” is not exactly a unique article idea, I thought I’d put my own spin on things.

So, let’s begin.

  • Books (Duh)

Writers like books. All of us. Okay, most of us. But I don’t trust those guys. And we are always searching for new books, even if it’s just for our shelves. Not sure what specific books they want? Just ask. Chances are they will have a long list.

  •  Themed Mugs

In addition to books, writers tend to like coffee. Correction: need coffee. And for those that don’t: tea. So it makes sense to give them a literary-minded way to drink it. The words on the mug should preferably be witty. So that the writer gets a good bit of amusement and inspiration when they start their day. Continue reading

Why You Should Write All The Damn Time

Alright beginners, let me tell you the magic secret to becoming a better writer.

“Write a lot, and read a lot.”

No, don’t you dare. I see you raising your hand in the back. I see you scoffing at me and rolling your eyes. You, slinking behind the buffet bar, don’t even try to run. The metaphorical door is locked and guarded and I hid the key underneath my fedora. Yes my fedora. I know it’s a pretentious hat, but I like wearing it.

So sit down. All of you. Let me disillusion you of some notions. Continue reading

To Artists

Hey artists, I want to talk to you. I think there’s something you need to hear. Perhaps it’s the first time someone’s told you these words–but I hope not. And even if they have, you deserve to hear them again.

You’re okay.

You’re important.

It may not seem like it some days, but you’re the future. Continue reading

News: This Is Not The Post You’re Looking For

Hey guys.

There’s not going to be a Wednesday post today (except this one). I spent the last two days dealing with a series of medical tests, and didn’t have time to write up an article for you. Now, don’t worry, I’m fine. In fact, I can say that with medical certainty now. And the peace of mind that brings me is worth all of the hassle I’ve been through these last couple of days.

But, still, I am sorry. I promise to have something for you guys on Saturday.

I’ll see you then.

How to Piss Off A Writer With 5 Easy Phrases

“Yeah, but what’s your real job?”

What the writer says: “Umm…it is my job. I write for a living.”

What the writer thinks: What, do you think writing isn’t a real job? I’d like to see you manage one week!

News: Patrons of the Arts

WE NOW INTERRUPT YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED BLOG ARTICLE FOR A SPECIAL REPORT FROM BRANDON SCOTT!

Hi, it’s…uh, me: Brandon Scott.

I was hesitant to write this article. I spent a few days flipping back and forth on the issue of even typing it up. I’m not really sure how you guys will take it, or what you’ll think of me for doing this…but in the end I decided to go through with it.

Ugh, the thing I’m dancing around here, the thing that I keep avoiding saying, the thing I’m stalling on is…well…I’m doing a Patreon campaign.

Now, don’t take this the wrong way. Continue reading

The Art Of The Flash Fiction, And Other Things I Probably Don’t Have Enough Authority To Talk About

I should make one thing abundantly clear, I’m not an authority on this.

I do not have any awards or certificates that prove I’m qualified to talk about this. I am not one of the masters. I am not one of the greats.

All I am is a blogger with a voice and an opinion who, on occasion, likes to talk about the craft of writing.

Of course, me saying all of this is just lampshading; so that if you disagree with me, I can claim immunity.

Anyhow, people who have been with me for a while know that I have a fondness for flash fiction. I write at least three a month, and they are often my most viewed posts. Continue reading
