To Artists

Hey artists, I want to talk to you. I think there’s something you need to hear. Perhaps it’s the first time someone’s told you these words–but I hope not. And even if they have, you deserve to hear them again.

You’re okay.

You’re important.

It may not seem like it some days, but you’re the future.

You’re what gives me hope for this species. You’re proof this planet deserves to exist.

You are not just a product of culture.

You are culture.

Writers, my family. Bound by something more important than blood. You give this world its stories. You make people’s lives lose its mundanity, and make dreams coherent.

Musicians, my friends. You give this world hope, and joy. You take the heaviness of existence and turn it into a beautiful song. You give emotions sound.

Actors, my heroes. You give art a face. You become conduits for characters, and stories, and beliefs. You make us laugh, and cry. You make us feel again.

Singers, my inspiration. You prove humans do indeed have a soul. You prove it every time you sweep away the world with just your voice.

Everyone else. If I had the time, I would describe how much each of you matter. You painters, and sculptors, and poets, and anyone I’ve forgotten. And any new types yet to grace this world.

I’m going to repeat that again.

You matter.

You matter.

YOU matter.

I know sometimes it does not seem like it. I know at the beginning it can feel like the world is against you. That even your family and friends are against you. And it can be hard. It can be so hard sometimes. The urge to quit is present in even the most dedicated artists.

But please don’t.

It’s only so hard because it’s important. It’s only so hard because it tests us. We are creating something from nothing. That is an act of the divine. That is a gift from something greater than our bodies. Greater than anything else.

So create. Create because you were born to do it. Create because it burns inside you with a fire.

Create so you might yet find immortality.

    • Thank you! I’ll admit…I actually got a bit misty eyed when I was writing them to. I’ve been wanting to make this for a long time.

I’m so glad you liked it! And you’re welcome!
