The Strange Appeal of Rick and Morty

Some media makes sense, some does not. Rick and Morty is in the latter camp, almost all the time. It is madness…and yet…

And yet, it is amazing. Adult Swim’s content lineup has never contained a huge draw for me until now. I never could get into the headspace of the stoner comedy, or enjoy strings of sexual and violent things someone calls a show. I cannot get behind just shock humor. Now, that’s not to say I don’t occasionally enjoy shock humor, but I just do not understand how I am supposed to find the stuff they put in their shows “funny.” Continue reading

Brandon’s Favorite Things: A List

The subjective nature of art, and the changing of a person’s personality as time goes by, adds up to it being desperately hard to nail down a favorites list. Media shifts as we do—at least from our perspective—and thus we will respond differently than we had minutes before. But, as a creator, and a consumer, and dare I use the pretentious word: “connoisseur” of creative things, I do feel it necessary to try to understand my taste in media, and since this is the internet, the natural tendency is to try to put it into an easy to read list.

So, here we go. I am going to, based on my opinions on this day 2/6/17 (which is when I wrote this…you’ll see the edited version on Wednesday) list out my favorite creation in each form of media I can think to include, along with a short reason for why. Though, to keep the word count reasonable, I’ll keep to only a few short sentences each.

So, here we go. My current all-time favorites. If I had to grab something for entertainment and run, these would be my choices. Continue reading

Monthly Mentions: January 2015

Another ongoing series!

As if I don’t already have enough of these!

As the month comes to a close, I thought I would make it a habit to set a record of the things I liked/discovered over the month so that I can take a look back and see how my taste in media grew and changed.

It also seems like a really great idea for an article, and a chance to give some shout-outs to my blogger friends.

So, allow me to present my favorite things this month, presented by category, but not in any particular order.

As a side note, these are not necessarily things that were made this month, just things I enjoyed during the time period.

Here we go! Continue reading

Review: Big Hero 6

Before I start this review I must make one thing clear: It takes a lot to get me to watch a movie.

Movie nights at my house, no matter who I’m with, are a struggle of herculean proportions. To even consider watching a movie, I have to study the critical ratings, who made it, and sometimes even what age group it’s for.

For instance, if you have looked at my Trailer Talk series, I often give high scores to trailers. But even those movies I do not end up watching.

I am telling you all of this, so that this next part has some context.

I chose to watch Big Hero 6, after hearing only two sentences:

  1. It’s a Marvel movie.
  2. It’s made by the creators of Frozen & Wreck-It Ralph

Netflix Quest: #4 Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated

Along the multiverse path there is a strange neighborhood. It is, somehow, both a pathway and a cul-de-sac. It spirals in on itself, twisting upwards into a funnel.

Trust me when I say it’s a bit hard to understand. But, thankfully, you can only see all of that if you happen to be on Soy Sauce. Or, a traveler.

I happen to be both. Continue reading

Trailer Talk: 11/1/14

With Halloween over and gone, it is time to get back to the basics.

After all, I got a Netflix Quest to finish.

But that comes later. For now, lets take a look at the Non-Horror trailers that have sprung up.

Presented the only way I know how….

THE TOP 5(+1) CARTOONS (IN MY OPINION) THAT ARE ANIME!

It was so much fun the first time, let’s do it again!

But this time around, I will be limiting myself to only Japanese cartoons; also known as anime.

Now, the nature of this list is also a bit different, because, unlike 90’s cartoons, I have not seen every show ever made. So I am working from a much smaller pool of content, and I am sure that some of the more hardcore Otakus out there will be a bit cross with me by the end of this. Continue reading

The Top 5(+1) Cartoons of the 1990-2014 (That are not Anime)!

With a title like that, what could possibly go wrong?

So yeah making a list of good cartoons from the 90’s is really hard. Like stupidly hard, there was more than you could possibly shake a stick at.

Then, just to make it even harder, I decided to add cartoons from this decade as well.

It really is a cluster f*** honestly.

Yet to explain this list I have to go over a conversation that I had. Though as to not spoil anything on the list, I will refer to the cartoon as “Cartoon X” .

The conversation went as such*…. Continue reading

Netflix Quest: #10. Samurai Jack

The first of my treasures I found almost by accident. I was travelling through the hall of the winds. A large chasm that is shaped in such a way that strong gust wiped down it every few minutes. My enchanted cloak did nothing to stop the force of the wind, that made every step a brutal task. The arduous journey was for but one purpose, to reach the great desert. I had heard of a long-lost circle of power, that was placed their by a wizard in white.

At this point in my walk, I was so sheltered in by my meager protective clothe, that I almost did not notice a strange fissure in the side of the rock. It gave off a comforting warmth that spread through my toes. I eagerly walked into the room pulling my face mask off and breathing in the dry air. It seemed to flow in a circular pattern, making a miniature wind storm. Continue reading
