Trailer Talk: An Analysis of “Ouija”

It’s a real shame I already reviewed Annebelle, because that would have been perfect for the month of October.

But that’s just another great thing about Halloween, the horror movies do not stop, till the month is done.

So, in the spirit of the holidays (pun totally intended) I am going to do another analysis,

A play-by-play of my reactions; if you will.

So let’s take a look at the latest ghost story that Hollywood has to serve up. Continue reading

FLASH FICTION CHALLENGE: FROM SENTENCE TO STORY

Looks like Chuck Wendig has yet another challenge for us.

This time, we need to create a 1k word story out of a single starting sentence.

So of course, I had to get in on that.

It took a long time to decide, but I eventually picked Kirsten’s:

There was an awkward moment as my breath hitched, my mouth too dry to swallow and my knees just seconds away from sending the rest of me folding into a pile of sweaty flesh at his feet, when I saw him smile.

So, to continue the month of Halloween, I bring you:

Showbiz!

Netflix Quest: #5 John Dies at the End

I’m not a stranger to alternate dimensions.

My job is to travel. My life has become this endless walking. The universe is infinite, as is the quantity of universes.

But travel’s fast, if you jump.

A broken bridge in one reality, fixed in another.

I have seen sights that would make you go white, then turn red, then go mad. In that order.

That’s just the nature of the Multiverse.

But today, I was not on some astral plane of higher reason, nor was I swinging through the jungles of the lava shrimp. I wasn’t even on the planet of Victoria Secret models.

No, today I was on earth. The usual earth, the one you know. The one you just thought of when you read this.

But something was different, you see. The old world, but through a new filter. No, not color, but a new layer. The things that existed on too high a plane, or too low, for us to notice. They all clearly stood, walking among you, running their fingers through people’s hair; cursing them with gingivitis, and milk-mustaches.

I was running on Soy Sauce you see.

And that s**t hits you hard. Continue reading

Special Trailer Talk: An Analysis of “Annabelle”

Trailer Time Everybody!

Only, this time I am going to try something new.

Instead of reviewing three different trailers, I’m doing one, Riff Style!

That’s right, I will be going through this second by second, and telling you my reactions.

And of course for my first time out, I chose a horror trailer. Continue reading

THE TOP 5(+1) CARTOONS (IN MY OPINION) THAT ARE ANIME!

It was so much fun the first time, let’s do it again!

But this time around, I will be limiting myself to only Japanese cartoons; also known as anime.

Now, the nature of this list is also a bit different, because, unlike 90’s cartoons, I have not seen every show ever made. So I am working from a much smaller pool of content, and I am sure that some of the more hardcore Otakus out there will be a bit cross with me by the end of this. Continue reading

FLASH FICTION CHALLENGE: CONTINUING THE TALE, PART TWO

So remember the challenge I did last week?

Well, Chuck Wendig decided that this weeks challenge will be for us to continue someone else’s story, but still not finish it.

So here we go again! I am continuing Kelly’s “Don’t Talk to the Dead” (click link for original article by Kelly)

The stuff in bold she wrote, while my continuation with remain in normal mode.

Ready? Let’s go!

Trailer Talk: 9/13/14

No matter how many movies you watch, there is always more.

More trailers too; so let’s give them a look.

WELCOME! To another addition of…..

TRAILER TALK!

The Guest

Interesting, interesting. Not the usual thing that I would watch.

This trailer makes this movie out as some sort of mixture of James Bond, and a Nicholas Sparks book.

Think about it. An attractive man comes to a small rural town, with intent to help out a family. Learning about the issues within, and making the family stronger as a unit.

Then, terrorists attack.

DUN.DUN.DUN!

With a premises like that, it really comes down to the execution. If they can make the family feel real, if they can make us care, then they will be able to pull it off.

Alternatively, if the family is s**t, then the action needs to kick-ass.

But from the trailer, it seems like the second will be the case. I just hope that they didn’t use it all up for the trailer.

I give it a 7 out of ten. Let’s see if the next one is a bit more, original.

Box Trolls

That was….charming. No other word for it. Just absolutely charming. Made by a group that created two of my favorite movies. I am absolutely excited for this.

The only issue, is the trailer really does not tell me anything about the story.

Sure, it shows us the wonder, and beauty of claymation, lovingly filmed and set up. The city, especially, took my breath away. But that does not guarantee a good movie. Just a pretty one.

But damn…that lovely, charming, world they created.

I give the trailer 10 out of 10. The movie however, is not going to get any good will from that.

Okay, maybe a little.

One more to go!

Tusk

What the hell!

Come on people! Another Human Centipede? Really?

Well at least the villain looks actually interesting. Also completely insane.

That’s important.

You see the funny thing is that I actually was interested, until he drugged him.

Up till then, I thought he was going to reveal some monster of the lake, or something like that.

But nope, he turns people into walruses. In Canada.

I would be forgiving if this was a comedy. But guess not, it looks like they are playing it straight.

So for letting me down, completely, I am going to give it the greatest dishonor I can muster.

A 1 out of 10!

It should feel ashamed.*

Alright, well, that concludes another addition of Trailer Talk. Tune in next time!

*If the movie does turn out a comedy, then I redact my earlier insults.

The Top Five Websites to Read (when you really should be writing)

The life of a writer is complex; to survive it, you need just the right mind for the job. Able to deal with all sorts of things that other jobs/hobbies/purposes of existence, simply do not need to. There is a reason why people think writers are crazy. Just a sampling of what we deal with includes:

  • Staring at a screen for an obscene amount of time, waiting for a single sentence to sound proper.
  • Trying to ignore characters voices when we are not actively writing about them.
  • Hand cramps, the likes of which the porn industry wishes it could invoke.
  • Crippling fear of failure. (“Oh god I have to work at McDonalds now”)
  • Crippling fear of success. (Success means live-readings, which by extension, means crowds)
  • The villains in your nightmares suddenly becoming people you invented. On purpose!
  • Getting bored of that one music playlists that you can listen to while writing.
  • The looming knowledge that computers might become advanced enough to make the written word obsolete.

Bow-Ties and Goodbyes

For a Whovian last Christmas, it was a time for celebration and festivities…….and soul crushing sadness. Because as of that Christmas day, Matt Smith stepped down from his perch and welcomed the new Doctor to the show.

If you have been a fan of this series for long enough, then you know that it was inevitable. The Doctor that you have come to love, will always leave. Be it from radiation poisoning, or from simply a lump on the head, the Doctor always says goodbye.

I remember it well, when Christopher left the show. He was my first doctor and I was not aware of the process of regeneration. You can imagine the shock when I saw my new favorite character just suddenly die. Taking the whole of time and space and trying to hold it, just to save Rose Tyler. Hurting him almost as much as it hurt me to watch it. Leaving me in a lump of emotions, staring at a dark screen. Continue reading

Rambling Review: The Hunger Games Trilogy

Things looking a bit different? Yeah, you could say that. You see I am having a bit of an event on the site for the next few weeks. You can read about it here. Otherwise, no worries, this is not permanent. Just a bit of fun. Hope you enjoy.

Warning: This article has massive spoilers of the Hunger Games Trilogy.

It’s a very good sign for society, that books are becoming popular again.

First we saw the Harry Potter boom, the seven part epic that made millions.

Then we saw the rise of the Twilight novels, an atrocious book series, which managed, despite its niche audience to turn into a massive movement.

Now we get to the next record smasher, The Hunger Games.

A new beast in that regard. As the last two phenomenon where just good stories. This one has a message to tell, a warning of what we could become.

So let’s take a look. Continue reading

Rambling Review: Brave New World (The Book)

It should be noted that this review is more of an overview. As such, it contains heavy spoilers. For anyone that thinks that they can skip reading the book by reading this review: Please do not attempt. I am not a substitute, just read the damn book. A little culture never hurt.

“O wonder!

How many godly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world! That has such people in’t!”

-Shakespeare

Never has a quote so perfectly matched a book. Continue reading

Rambling Review: Warm Bodies

Things looking a bit different? Yeah, you could say that. You see I am having a bit of an event on the site for the next few weeks. You can read about it here. Otherwise, no worries, this is not permanent. Just a bit of fun. Hope you enjoy.

Like it or not, Twilight as a film series was a huge hit. It made millions, and started a massive fan base. For those of us that had any connection to it, you know how insane it could get. Lines and crowds all screaming its name.

Now, you see the thing about movies, and the media in general, is that they are a business. Nothing makes as much money as Twilight, without getting industry attention. The industry loves to slam an idea into the ground until no more cash could be made from the product.

Go to any bookstore and you will see that, in the wake of Twilight, monsters and romance have become a combo that adds up to billions of dollars.

Same for movies, the industry is willing to milk it as far as they can. Any supernatural creature is up for the taking. Continue reading
