Year Two Christmas Collection #7: Favorite Book Review! “Periodic Pretentious Book Reviews: ‘Scythe’ by Neal Shusterman”

(Originally Posted May 10th, 2017.)

As some of you may know, I am a reviewer of sorts when I feel the urge. And though I am not one who wants to spend all my time reviewing things, it is an itch I like to scratch on occasion. So, since I read a lot, I figured I might occasionally review a book for your enjoyment, and perhaps along the way swing someone to read a book they might not have otherwise. Continue reading

Year Two Christmas Collection #9: Weirdest Microfiction! “Microficiton: Tricks”

This is all in my head right?

Oh yes, indeed it is. But then again, isn’t everything?

Year Two Christmas Collection #10: Weirdest Flash Fiction! “Weird Flash Fiction: Let’s Picture A Room”

(Originally Posted February 27th, 2016.)

Oh yeah, this is going to be weird. Strap in folks.

I call it:

Let’s Picture A Room

Let’s paint a picture shall we? Let’s go with a living room. It’s a tad hazy at first, though. Since I didn’t give you any specifics. Or you just subbed in a living room like the one you have, or what a friend has. But you can see a living room now. You should see it clearly. Continue reading

Year Two Christmas Collection #11: Weirdest Personal Article! “Why I Wear A Jacket All The Time”

(Originally Posted Septemeber 13th, 2017.)

I don’t know of many creatives without some odd habits. And, with me, the most prominent and noticeable ones are my night owl tendencies and my relationship with jackets. I’ve talked about the night and my place in it before, but I’ve barely, if at all, discussed my jacket fixation, and I think it’s about time I fix that oversight. Because I goddamn love jackets. If I could comfortably sleep in a jacket I would—and don’t think I haven’t tried. Continue reading

Year Two Christmas Collection #12: Most Personal Article! “I Was Fat”

(Originally posted July 19th, 2017.)

For a good part of my life, I weighed close to 300 pounds. I’m talking when I was a teenager. At the ages when such a thing, regardless of what’s taught and preached, easily marks you.

It got me scorn. Some people, people I didn’t even know, looked at me like I was fucking scum. I’m fortunate enough to know a lot of nice and kind people who didn’t—but yeah, still years of glares and critical eyes. Continue reading

News: Christmas Collection Year 2!

For those who do not know, last year I did a special event called the Christmas Collection, where every day, for twelve days, I reposted an article I particularly liked for different categories. It made for a good way for me to have some time off for the holidays and yet not leave you guys with nothing fun to read.

And, well, you know what time of the year it is: so, let’s do this thing again! Starting tomorrow, I’ll be posting the second round of my now annual event that is the Christmas Collection, and then the next new post from me will be the third part of the New Year’s Book Cheers for 2017 on the 30th.

It will be fun! I’ve read some good stuff this year.

But, in the meantime, I hope you have a happy holiday, no matter what you celebrate, and that you’ll join me next year here on Coolerbs Writes. Continue reading

Christmas In Florida

Are you shivering when it’s about sixty degrees? Is it possible to work up a good sweat just by walking outside on Christmas Eve? Do you have no concept of how much it is snowing in other states?

Yes?

Well then, you’re ready for Christmas in Florida. Continue reading

The New Education

It’s no secret among those that know me that I have a bone to pick with the American education system. And the economic system…and how society treats various groups and religions…and well…

We’re getting off topic.

It’s easy enough to criticize those systems, and smarter people than I do that with eloquence and detailed research. So, instead of retreading, I’m writing this for the students stuck in that system. Those of you suffering under it.   Continue reading

Flash Fiction: Pile Of Stones

I’d never learned to count past ten, so I’m not quite sure what age I am. We keep marks on the door and the walls, with chalk and dirt and mud. And fecal matter. So, if we ever learned how long a year is, we could figure it out, and then we’d know our ages.

Until then though, I am somewhere past ten. And for the last five of that ten, I’ve been in this room. They bring me birthday gifts, and I counted them. Each one was a slightly larger sack. I wear them until they are too small. Continue reading

Simple Joy

There is something to be said about the simple things. The tiny actions and circumstances that inspire joy that perhaps we don’t talk about enough.

And, I’m thankful for my family, my health, my privileges, and all the usual things—but with Thanksgiving coming up super soon, I thought I’d do something a bit more outlandish, and tell you, dear reader, about the more abstract things I am thankful for, and appreciate.

So, yeah, let’s get a tad schmaltzy. Continue reading

Microfiction: Glug

A bubble of air moves to the surface and pops. Anderson raises his eyebrow at this.

“What’s that…?” he asks and leans over the hole.

“Just air escaping,” Sonia says, and adjusts in her seat. She’d let Anderson have the one actual chair and was sitting on a bucket inside the makeshift tent.

“But from what? How did air get down there?” Anderson says, and keeps his head over the hole. Nothing else happens to the surface, nothing much moves or shudders. “We’ve had no fish for hours, and then this…” Continue reading

Too Much Content!

“You can’t have too much of a good thing” is a bullshit statement. And as opening sentences to my articles go that might be the most jarring one I’ve done in a while. But, it’s true—so very true. I am inundated with stuff I want to watch and read and experience and do. I realize, like a lot of the stuff I talk about online, that this is a first world problem. But, hey, I am being more open, and this is what I am dealing with. My problems, shared by others, may not actually matter much in the long run, but that doesn’t mean they are not valid in the immediacy of strong emotion. Continue reading
