Focus More

The difference between listening to a video and listening to music is staggering. Perhaps not great for my health, but my media intake is pretty steady, and I do a lot of it while I am mid other tasks. It’s the only way I could keep up with all the media that I like and that I need to see as a professional critic (among many other internet jobs I have) but, recently, I have been getting into some intensely mentally active activities. I Want To Do More

It’s not that I am not productive and active and such in my life. Not as though I fail to have meaningful contributions. I’d like to think I lead an existence that’s not particularly slothful—but my own ability to do as much as I would want in any given day bugs me to no end.

For instance, sure, you know of the one book I’ve written—I’d hope—but I’ve actually written somewhere in the ballpark of 20-25 novels/novellas in just two years’ time. But my editing skills and my speed at it are so slow, and I can’t seem to get a good schedule going, that there’s only one book you know about right now. Continue reading

A Lazy Workaholic

I refer to myself as a “workaholic” because of one annoying tendency I have: it’s hard for me to just have free time. Being my own boss taught me to force myself to work, and work, and work, and then some more. Even if I’m working on personal projects, and not for any of my clients—it changes little.

On the outside, this is not apparent. I have been called “pretty chill” by someone who has been around me for smaller periods of time. I give off an aura of being calm, sort-of bored, and reserved if they catch me at the right times. Continue reading

Burning Your Candle

I used to be able to push myself to five in the morning, every single day. I did this for months, always hating it, always wishing I did not have to be up that late. But, behold, that was what always happened.

Fucking inescapable.

It’s still happening, and it is my own fault. I’ve probably (but I’m not sure) mentioned this before on the blog, but I subscribe to a thing I call “The Dailies.” They are activities that I must accomplish, no matter how sleepy I am, no matter what, within a cycle of me being awake. Flash Fiction: Uncertainty In The Workplace

The higher-ups of the company did not deem it necessary to interview the beings who quit out of the job. But, when it came to Jerald Punch, Employee of the Month six months running, they had to know why he would leave the game so young.

“Is it the pay?” asked the first, his eyeglasses covering the deep embers that should be human eyes. Continue reading

Writing Can Be Boring (And That’s Okay)

There’s a thing known by those of us who have written a novel. And, it’s a controversial thing. Not something widely shouted, or thrown into the cosmos for all to hear. But, it is true: no matter how hard to believe. And, you may get mad at me for saying this, but, here’s the gist: writing, making art, creating stuff, is often a little boring.

It’s taxing. It’s hard. Art takes a long time—and with no guarantee that the result will be any good. Continue reading
