To those that see a painting in twilight skies.
To those who pour out their heart because they need someone to understand.
To those that push themselves harder—harder—harder, until they find a new way.
To those that don’t sleep, don’t eat, sacrifice their bodies for the sake of something grand.
To those that explain, again and again, rather than fight.
To those that choose others above themselves.
To those that love. Continue reading
Imposter syndrome, fear of criticism, and creative blocks. Some more legitimate than others, but all real. I would know, I’ve had them. But, despite being a nervous, introverted, lessening-so-but-still-shy person, I’ve done a good enough job of being out there with my artistic work.
Those issues I listed come down to a little voice telling us we are failures, that we are about to get shanked by the world at large for our lack of talent. And, while I don’t know how to make myself able to tell a speech to a crowd, I have advice for how to slay this beast of a voice. Continue reading
I am a writer, and with that title comes all these stereotypes about the way I might dress or act. And, while some of these are accurate, some are harmful or untrue. Writers are stereotypically alcoholics, for instance, and that does not apply to me—I barely touch the stuff.
But, then, we get to the other stereotypes, the more neutral ones. The stuff that’s not harmful, and more just a product of popular culture, and, it is here, with these, that I have an interesting relationship. Because, I don’t wear tweed or carry around a paper notebook (I have a phone, after all), and I don’t constantly wear a knapsack or a fedora. But, unlike the bad stereotypes, some of these generalities I feel tempted to adopt, even if they are clichés. Continue reading
Here’s my problem: I’m scared to be more personal. But, like any relationship, like any friendship, you must be open with people—or you will not get anywhere. And, being open, means being open to the possibility of pain. You can’t be emotionally hurt by people if you are not exposed enough to be loved.
And, well, blogging is not unlike that. I am, right now, doing what I am comfortable with. Sharing what of me I feel I can. And sending it out there for people to see.
But, with that said, I’m not super comfortable with this social media world we live in right now. I don’t mind sharing in person. I’m an open individual generally—were we to talk face-to-face—but I also know what a danger the internet can be. Continue reading
There’s a thing known by those of us who have written a novel. And, it’s a controversial thing. Not something widely shouted, or thrown into the cosmos for all to hear. But, it is true: no matter how hard to believe. And, you may get mad at me for saying this, but, here’s the gist: writing, making art, creating stuff, is often a little boring.
It’s taxing. It’s hard. Art takes a long time—and with no guarantee that the result will be any good. Continue reading
I’ve been a writer my entire life.
I just didn’t realize it.
That was until one fateful night, when the editor and chief of Scifibloggers.com contacted me and asked if I would write for him.
I was nervous to say the least, I hadn’t seriously written anything in years. My interest was computers, and I wanted to design video games. I warned him that I wasn’t any good, and that I didn’t think it was a good idea.
He persisted, and got me to write a simple article talking about the death of the eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who (an article that was later edited and posted on this very blog) as a test to see if I was good enough for the site.
It took me an hour to write that article, and I sent it off to him. Feeling nervous as hell, I awaited his judgement.
About twenty minutes later, he hired me on the spot. Continue reading
