Microfiction: New Villain

“Why must I be the evil one?”

The being of pure light looked at me. I had been converted first to human form. My armor was black, and my sword was on fire—and I hated it.

“Because someone needs to be,” the being said, then slowly formed into a person. Nose and ears and such coming in slowly. “I am sorry though—but that’s the way it’s got to be.”

“Why?”

“Because for all of this to work, there has to be a villain. Someone for us to fight—for the world to combat. That way there is a common enemy. To unite them.”

“No, I get that. That’s basic orientation,” I said. “But why am I the villain? I was the villain on the last planet. Do you know how hard it is to be a political figure style villain? I can’t accidentally level a building, or the whole world freaks out and shit.”

The being, now a red-haired man in silver armor, shrugged. “It’s random—you know that. I don’t decide who of us is going to be the villain each time. Don’t feel so picked on—okay?”

“Fine…” I mumbled.

“Besides,” he said. And I looked at him.

“You look good as the villain.”

It was not a symbol of hatred on this current planet, in this current dimension, but I held up my middle finger. “Fuck you.”

“Not this time. This form is asexual.”

I rolled my eyes and then waited for the next part of the game. The moment when we’d get seeded in some part of the world and would then get to work inducing the battle to end all conflict. At some point, I would need to be poisoned, or shot, or melted.

Likely this time killed with a big-as-fuck magic sword.

I just hoped that, unlike the one I was already carrying, it would not be on fire.

I got burned at the stake last time—and that had sucked.

“Just Another Chosen One is a blisteringly paced, action-soaked debut from author Brandon Scott, sure to appeal to those who’ve gotten tired of reading the same old stories about the child of prophecy destined to save the world.”
