Microfiction: Subtext

This is a tale, told only in dialogue and thought.

A tale called:

Subtext

“How are you doing?”

How do you think I’m doing?! You cheated on me Janet, you ripped my heart out and stamped on it.

“I’m fine.”

“It’s been awhile, hasn’t it?”

Four months and three days.

“Yeah, it has been.”

“How’s the job?”

It’s miserable. I couldn’t focus, I couldn’t sleep. I’ve been demoted several times. It’s amazing I’m still working there.

“Oh you know, same old, same old.”

“Are you seeing anyone?”

Only first dates. I’m too damaged now.

“No.”

“Alright…look Ben…I made a mistake.”

You’re damn right you did.

“Yeah.”

“I never meant to hurt you.”

Words, those are just words.

“Sure.”

“I didn’t. I really didn’t. We were already growing apart Ben. It wouldn’t have lasted.”

You don’t know that. How could you possibly know that?!

“I don’t care.”

“Ben please.”

Bitch.

“You hurt me Janet”

“You’re scaring me.”

Good, be afraid.

“I didn’t know what to do for so long.”

“Please, put that down.”

I want you to understand how I felt. Can you do that for me?”

“Ben…please put the gun down.”

“Janet, I want you to bleed. I want you to know my pain.”

So then maybe you’ll love me again.
