Poem: New Year

Well, a new year—

A new start—

A new day.

In a single year,

Time bends and twists—

Shorts and lightens,

And we can look back and wonder,

What might have been,

We can look forward,

And sing a song for our hopes—

Our dreams.

Our lives.

A kiss deep and true—

Between the future and you.

Loved ones, new and old,

Pulled into life—

Because they are—

Because they do.

There’s a world of dreams and hope.

And I think is standing,

Perhaps,

If lucky,

Right in front of you.

No matter what you believe,

As dark as machinations may ring,

Even nihilists can decide there’s a good reason—

To sing—

To love.

To be absolutely—

Entirely—

Ready to face a world—

A world that’s still singing,

Happy,

And alive.

For another year,

I hope.

For another decade,

I hope.

Forever—

If it can.

Let new years come, bring life,

Bring anew—

To all that is.

Again, and again.

Let babies coo,

And guitar strums impress,

And someone out there find what they always wanted.

Resolutions are pointless.

But, if I must,

If I may,

Let me always—

Every time I try,

Find myself better now,

Than I was yesterday.

“Just Another Chosen One is a blisteringly paced, action-soaked debut from author Brandon Scott, sure to appeal to those who’ve gotten tired of reading the same old stories about the child of prophecy destined to save the world.”
